Sponsoring a child’s education – advice for the foreigner

Many foreigners have a genuine desire to help Ghanaians further their education. Unfortunately, scammers are misusing this. Based on the scams we have come across we want you to consider the following questions before you send money for school fees:

  1. How will you tell if the school really exists? Most schools don’t have email and websites. Many people just make up the name of a school. How will you check and whose word will you trust?
  2. Do you really know how much schools charge in Ghana and what they charge for?
  3. If the school is real, how will you know if the boy is actually attending?
  4. How will you know if that phone call from the Head of the school is for real and not just from his aunty or uncle?
  5. Likewise, how will you know if that email from the Head is not just a fake Yahoo account?
  6. Do you know what a real school receipt looks like – faking receipts is easy and often done.
  7. Do you know what a Ghanaian school report really looks like?

If you really want to sponsor a child’s education there are many legitimate organisations that do this. They will ensure the money is used correctly and also support the child in getting to school. Moreover they will monitor the child’s progress.
