Turn your bad experience into something postitive. We often hear that people do nothing when they have been scammed. They think there is no point and that nothing is going to happen to bring about justice.
But simply telling your story can help others as comments on this website and other dating scam websites will testify.
Staying in contact with the scammer is not advised by most authorities in this matter neither is the practise of scam-baiting which can teach the scammers new techniques.
You are advised to save all your chat messages (yahoo can automatically save every chat if you change the settings). Save email addresses and photos and the ID they were using at the dating site or other site.
Do not tell your scammer about this site as they can learn from it.
Here are a number of steps you can take:
1. Inform us
2. Notify the dating site.
3. File a complaint at the Internet Crime Complain Center (IC3)
4. Contact other appropriate organisations e.g. the police, Embassy. See the

I saw a TV show in England about a retired (straight) man that sent money to what he thought was a genuine woman in Ghana. He was waiting for his love at the airport, she of course didn’t show up. then a fantastic tale of accidents and drama unfolded, with requests for more, and more money.
I went on gayromeo to see how bad this is. In only a few days I’ve been messaged by almost 100 ghanaian men, and a few profiles from kansas and other US cities. I have never been on a site with so many fake profiles and such active criminality.
Gayromeo actively encourage the ghanaian scams. When anyone creates a profile based in ghana they are immediately given a free plus account. If gay romeo were interested in slowing the flood of ghanaian scams they would limit ghanaian profiles; instead of giving them plus accounts, they could restrict them, such as limited accounts for 2 weeks, limited messages… Genuine people in Ghana looking for a relationship wouldn’t be put off by this.
I sent a message to gayromeo asking them if they are in league with the ghanaian scammers, as their actions are actively encouraging criminal activity. They did not reply.
If you went to a bank in your home town that had 100 homeless people waiting outside; each of them asking you for money as you entered and left; would you use that bank if there were others in your town? There are many ‘dating sites’ available, why use gayromeo and go through the hassle of trying to spot the one genuine person out of hundreds of fakes? To continue the comparison, gayromeo is like a company that gives the homeless chairs to sit on, sleeping bags to sleep in, and plenty of free drinks and food to keep them coming back time after time to annoy you when you use the companiy’s services.

We have also attempted dialogue with Gay Romeo and what became clear was they approach this from a European perspective. They lack understanding of Ghanaian culture and the fact that the criminal justice system does not work in many parts of Africa.

Safest thing you can do is assume any guy from Ghana is a potential scammer. Don’t be fooled by these guys, they are (comparatively) clever. They’ll spend hours chatting to you and can come across very convincing, talking about all sorts of stuff that can seem realistic/mundane/normal/believable. Money or funding will come up somewhere in the conversation, but they might wait for you to offer to help, rather than ask you direct. Don’t be taking in by any documents they send or third party contacts, and be sure to see them and speak directly to them on webcam. Most will be user cyber cafe’s to chat. their photo is likely not to be them and any name they give is likely to be false. My advice is steer clear. there’s plenty of more genuine blokes in other countries.

One big scam, is (Logan Taylor) who proclaims his mother is dying in the hospital and he needs money for an operation to keep her alive. He really puts on the pressure and attempts to make you feel bad if don’t send him money. He blames you if his mom dies! I told him of resources in the country he can contact for help but he insisted the only way to keep his mom alive is if i sent him money.RIP MOM. P.S. he is so dump he tried me twice wihtout realizing he had already tried me.

Also, is it safe to say that if you start chatting with a POTENTIAL scammer or faker, that they immediately start talking about finding a business partner or looking for a job or saying that they are orphans? is this how we can tell that there is a dark motivation to cheat you?

It would make a great movie! and here’s the plot.
He still has a team of people working for him faking it as his lawyer, a doctor and a brother.
He is pretty good at playing the “poor me” card. SMS him and say you are sending money via Western Union y and he is right on line within 1 minutes. Ask him to send you some documents to verify his claim and he is suddenly sick or his internet is down.
Rating: Gervin gives a 5 star performance …expect lots of fake documents, excuses and general lies.

Wow! I just discovered your site and realize just how invaluable this information and advice is. Great job volunteers!! About a year ago I met a guy online and fell in love with him. It was almost scary how perfect the relationship was and how smoothly it developed. But once I was hooked on him I would have done anything for him (yeah I know, what a fool I am). He was quite calm in ‘sharing’ his needs – he never demanded or put the presure one me, but me feeling I was in love, took the initiative to help him. Over a period of a few months I had sent about $6500 to him. Everything that came along was easily explained and in my mind was necessary. It started small with money for the internet cafe and as the intesity of the relatioship developed so did the needs, such as a cell phone so we could be in contact all the time, then a lap top so we had better communication with email at anytime of day or night. What made me open my eyes was the last time he had a need, being a sick mother in the hospital and how he manipulated me and had me believing that if she died without medication it was my fault! I have since been able to completely cut him off but the emotional tie that was formed with a lier is more embarassing and painful than the money I lost. In the begining of the relationship he was in Freetown, Sierra Leone, but through ‘circumstances’ ended up in Accra. I have a suspicion that there were maybe two or three of them working together and that maybe he was never actually in Freetown but Accra the whole time. I am wondering now if anyone else had incidents with this guy who went by the name of Labesta on Manjam, Sexyjay007 on adam4adam and Lamjay007 on yahoo and msn. In hindsight I was foolish but hope that this might help someonelse who is being scammed by this guy.

Some of the issues raised here are very true and make sense. Especially the analysis of William is largely correct. But still, not everybody is looking for the same kind of relationship; where sexuality is concerned there are so many different desires some eluding obvious logic.
Fortunately people with special desires sometimes do get lucky, even in Ghana. Relationships, strange to the avarage gay man (strange even that gays asume that mainstream = normality), have proven to last for years and make both unlikely partners very happy. I know for example of slave-master relationships of wealthy managers with illiterate young men, which seem to be very long lasting and loving. It is not my fantasy but I recognize that it can be good and fully satisfying for some.
What I do regret about this site is that (obviously unavoidable) people get to accuse boys without proof. I know e.g. of a German guy (yes the same guy who had you remove the name of his boyfriend from the visa scam, which he himself actually brought to your attention) who is sandering against other guys from Christian Village. His boyfriend is telling him lies and he then puts a lot of stories on the internet. That is why I banned him from Gayghana.org. e.g. the stories in the very top of your blacklist (against Frank Avorsey and George Morris) are largely untrue. These guys definitly do not deserve to top of your list; they are relatively harmless compared to some other scammers and do not pose a threat to anyone.

On your later comment, we do try to get proof before we ‘accuse’ anyone. The information about Frank and George has come from a number of independent sources not just our ‘German’ friend. This site puts the latest entries at the top – it is not supposed to be in order of harm. But you are right to say that care needs to be taken before putting people on this site.

Just been scammed by a very believable guy in ghana. Told me he was despaerate to complete his education. Name was Abdullah Abass (false). We cahtted for hours everyday on Messenger and the chat was fluid and convincing and described his daily routine everyday. I wasn’t suspiious until everything kept coming round to money. He only wanted Western Union used for sending money. My advice to anyone hooked on a guy from overseas, especially the high scan countries, is to employ one of the investigation agencies to research the guy. If you can afford to send money, you can afford their services. I used them, but too late before I had send nearly £1k. And never believe any document or photo. These guys are pretty good at digitally altering anything. Also don’t believe gmail addresses are for real. they are just like a hotmail address.
Lastly, if the guy is for real, gay and in love with you, I doubt that he will want your money, although…

Investigation agency used I am unable to reveal, due to contractual limits, but they advertise on the mail web page for scams. They charged me $400 paid up front to investigate and report by email (they called it level 3 investigation). They took less than 3 working days to make checks on the details and document copies that I had given them. They confirmed that documents had been altered and that names and contact numbers that I thought I were genuine were indeed fake. Report was detailed and professional and I would recommend them. So I spent $400 but saved myself much more than that. Profile was on Gayromeo as my-heart-desire but has been removed by him. My advice to anyone is to never believe what you see or what you are told on gay dating sites, because these scammer guys are clever at what they do. Difficult I know, but just keep that doubt at the back of your mind, AND DON’T SEND MONEY unless your loaded and can afford to lose it. Oh well. A lesson learned for me and back to square one. Perhaps I need to get out more !!!!

I visited Ghana this August for first time. I had contact with few boys before, but I didn’t communicate with them on my arrival.
Ghana is pretty country. I was surprised by possibility 2 walk alone during the night. I thought it’s more danger. In fact I was outside after midnight without any problems ( Accra, Kumasi, Cape coast , Takoradi). I visited only southern part of country. As I say pretty but nothing exiting.
Men around are mostly pretty. They want to contact. In fact I was in Osu in spot affront of tro-tro station in center. It’s mostly occupied by Nigerians and some Ghanaians but for shore scammers…be carful.
In Takoradi in cyber I had possibility to met two young man who claimed themselves as gay. They talked me about work as voluntaries in gay community in town, which have to be bigger then in Accra.
I spent each evening with some pretty young man, but just in some restaurant chating with them and drinkning some vine or beer.
Sex, or something similar…lol…no way.
All of them see in me only wallet.
So if you are tourist enjoy Ghana, otherwise stay at home.
If you can’t exist to see some pretty naked “bebeny” body then just stay at home chat with some one from Ghana and insist to see him …they will show you all it’s treasure.

NB: un mec qui dit être discrèt ne peut pas ensuite afficher sa photo… et si des gens vous affirment être les personnes sur les fotos, exigez de le vérifier à la cam. celui qui vous dira qu’il ne peut trouver une cam pour vous le prouver est automatiquement un menteur et un escroc car tous les cyber d’abidjan et de côte d’ivoire sont dotés de webcam… donc à parti d’aujourd’hui exigez de voir vos correspondants par webcam…
les voir ensuite par cam ne veut pas forcement dire qu’ils ne sont pas des anarqueurs. car la nouvelle tendance est de vous pousser à venir en côte d’ivoire et à votre arrivée, de vous dépouiller de tous vos bien. c’est pareil aussi pour les mecs ivoiriens sérieux qui vivent ici. avant d’accepter un rdv avec un mec avec qui vous avez discuté par ici ou sur le net, exigez que le rdv se fasse la journée et dans un lieu public. au pis des cas, si vous préférez la nuit, rencontrez vous dans un lieu public et faites attention, surtout si votre rencart s’amène avec un ou 2 de ses potes…

This is a great web site and a wealth of information. But I wonder where to go in Accra if visiting from outside Ghana, to meet real Ghana gay Guys, not just for sex but perhaps to meet genuine people and even maybe a partner for life. Where in Accra does this exist? I wish fakers2go good wishes but we should work together to be positive about good things for Ghana (like real clubs, meeting places, groups) not just focusing on fakers. More people would be happy to help I think.

Thanks for your comments which are constructive. There is no ‘gay scene’ in Ghana and many people just have gay sex without necessarily being gay. There used to be a bar but it no longer exists. There are a few groups but they do not welcome foreigners who may just come to prey on the boys. Most of us meet people through friends or parties. There are places people interested in men hang out but they are mixed and everything is underground. There are lots of good people but you are unlikely to meet them on a holiday.
If you have not been to Africa before you need to exercise caution. You can meet lots of Ghanaians in London where you have legal protection and where jobs mean less financal goals. Don’t come to Ghana with the intention of finding a partner. Instead come to enjoy the country. In one trip you cannot assess the honesty of an individual and it’s even harder when you return and have a long distance relationship. The scammers have learnt to tell foreigners what they want to hear. You have no way of knowing whether they are for real or not unless you are here on a long term basis and can get to know them over a few years.

Hi Mhitle. Have a great time in Ghana but stay wise. You will make lots of friends, people will throw themselves at you, but most will be opportunists. The real friends you will make will come later when you have been here for a while. How well do you know this friend from Central Africa? Be very careful about setting up a business with him. Most foreigners loose huge amounts of money when they first start business in Ghana and letter become wise. If this man runs away where will you find him? It’s important to know people’s homes, families, work, church and so on, so that if anything goes wrong you can talk to these people. People seem trust worthy but get to know how things work before you start anything.

Educated, middle class people, male and female, come to Africa and gravitate towards the uneducated and jobless. In a culture where class (social status) is clearly defined, they cross the line then wonder at the resulting confusion.
What type of relationship can you get from someone who only completed primary school? And primary school in Ghana is a lower level than in the West!
Most of these boys have ‘nothing doing’ and the sad fact is they never will. If you want to help them (which is often foolish) that is one thing but don’t expect to find love. There are genuine NGO’s you can work through who will monitor people going through school and so on.
Someone said they come for boyfriends in Ghana because Ghanaians are ‘available’. Think about the implications of what this person said.
In Ghana, the most available people are the opportunists. You will meet them easily. They survive by feeding off others.
The good people are far too busy to be chasing foreigners. But you can meet these people if you go to the expensive restaurants and clubs. Instead, foreigners seem to want to party in Christian Village.
The question is, why don’t these foreign men want to form relationships with educated, working (and older) men? Is it because the excitement comes from the ‘thug’ image they carry with them from the West? Is it because those who already have money can’t be dictated to? Is their independence threatening?
There are plenty good guys here who are genuinely gay and are looking for real relationships. But, in Ghana, things take time to cultivate. You won’t meet them straight away. You are unlikely to meet them as a tourist. If you did meet them how would you recognise them?
Just look at the low-life on this website. Are these the sort of people you would date in your own country and show to your mother and business associates?
